2017 SD Scotland Supporters Summit Roundup

Date: 27th March 2017

Last Sunday we were delighted to welcome a host of individuals and organisations to the annual SD Scotland Supporters Summit, held at Hampden Park.

The event was kicked off with Mark Guidi, compere for the day. Mark then introduced the chair of SD Scotland, Morag McHaffie who shared a few words welcoming attendees before passing over to Andrew Jenkin, Head of SD Scotland.

Attendees than welcomed Angela and Ellie (aged 9) from the Our Streets campaign who shared their story of raising awareness of the impact of the match day influx of supporters to the local Parkhead community.

We were then honoured to welcome The Guardian’s David Conn who shared some of his experiences having covered football for the past 20 years. David shared just some of the differences between the finances of Scottish and English football before outling why Scottish football has an opportunity to treat this as a positive with the conditions perfect for heightened supporter involvement in the ownership and governance of their clubs.

Attendees were then able to hear about this first hand with Stuart Wallace and Garry Halliday from the Foundation of Hearts, along with Heart’s Martin Jesper, sharing the Foundation’s story – a case study for successful supporter involvement.

The speaker in the morning with the Scottish FA’s Chief Executive Stewart Regan who shared the vision for ‘Project Brave’, allowing supporters to hear the details of how the football association would be aiming to improve the national team’s performances through targeted youth development.

The morning was concluded with a Question and Answer session with the speakers. After lunch, attendees heard from Ashley Brown, Chair of the Pompey Supporters Trust and Supporters Direct Chief Executive on the story of how the Trust purchased the club.

The afternoon session evolved around workshops on the topics of:

  • Club Development Scotland
  • Colours of our Scarves
  • Fan Representatives on the Board of Clubs
  • Supporter Liaison Officers
  • Trust Training
  • Who Owns What

We’d like to thank every single person that came to the event and showed their support for SD Scotland. Special thanks to our speakers, workshop deliverers and volunteers/staff that made the day possible and run smoothly. We hope to see you next year for a bigger and better day out!
