Scotland’s only amputee football team was put through its paces by Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill today [Sunday 28 August] when he stepped in as guest coach for Partick Thistle Amputees.

Partick Thistle Amputees was put together by Finding Your Feet, Scotland’s leading limb-loss charity of which O’Neill is patron, and amputees from across the country attended today’s training session to benefit from O’Neill’s expertise.
Finding Your Feet hooked up with the Jags in March to give amputee Scots the opportunity to play football north of the border for the first time, prior to which Scots amputees had to travel more than 150 miles for a game of football.
The team has enjoyed regular training sessions since its formation and has already proved its prowess on the pitch when it competed south of the border in July. The team clinched the Runners Up shield at the England Amputee Football Association (EAFA) Takeda Cup Final at West Bromich, defeating veteran amputee teams including Arsenal and Man City Amputees. And with the team set to compete at the EAFA Irwin Mitchell Pre-season Cup 2016/17 at Manchester City’s training ground in October, the team hopes O’Neill’s guidance will help them secure more silverware.
Finding Your Feet was set up two years ago by Corinne Hutton, who was left a quadruple amputee after losing her hands and feet to septicaemia in June 2013. The charity supports amputees and those with limb differences through the creation of sporting and social initiatives including amputee climbing, skiing, swimming, cycling, football and movement therapy. Since her illness, Corinne (45) from Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire, who plays on the team and attended today’s training session, has succeeded in raising hundreds of thousands of pounds to help other amputees and more recently became the first female quadruple amputee in history to conquer Ben Nevis.
Northern Ireland’s unprecedented success at the Euros has seen charity patron Michael O’Neill’s stock and profile rise considerably, after he led his side to the second round before suffering a narrow defeat to Wales. He has been furnished with a growing list of honours in recognition of his achievements, including BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award 2016; RTE Manager of the Year Award; and Phillips Manager of the Year award. The session at Firhill falls just 24 hours before he will lead his international side to a training camp in Austria in preparation for the team’s first World Cup qualifier match against Czech Republic in Prague on 4 September.
Until Finding Your Feet’s collaboration with Thistle, amputee Scots had been required to travel more than 150 miles for a game of football. And since news broke of the charity’s collaboration with the Jags, other Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) clubs have shown interest, with Rangers, Aberdeen and Heart of Midlothian among those keen to establish dedicated teams for players with amputations. Finding Your Feet will launch amputee football in the east in September by hosting a session in the Scottish capital, O’Neill’s own city of residence.
The England Amputee Football Association, a registered charity, currently works to set up new Amputee Football clubs across England, but there has until now been no equivalent body established in Scotland, until Finding Your Feet stepped in. The intention is that Finding Your Feet will support the creation of teams at other clubs throughout Scotland, before a Finding Your Feet league will be created next year. The sport is open to those with either upper or lower amputations or limb differences and the charity’s project is being backed by the Scottish Football Association.
Ashley Reid, communications director at Finding Your Feet, commented: "Finding Your Feet is about providing amputees with opportunities to take part in all sorts of sporting, social and recreational activities. We were made aware that there was an appetite for amputee football in Scotland but no current provision for it so we made it happen. We’ve been overwhelmed with the demand for the sport and look forward to launching it in the East next month. Having Michael here today has been a huge boost to the players.”
Michael O’Neill commented: “I first got involved with Finding Your Feet earlier this year when I heard about the amputee football pilot project. I live in Scotland and wanted to support a Scottish charity where I could make a real contribution. Finding Your Feet is about creating opportunities and increasing accessibility in sport, something I feel very strongly about. It’s refreshing to see that the media spotlight is increasingly focusing on disability-sports – something particularly relevant given the Rio Paralympics.
I’ve been blown away by the skill on the pitch today and I look forward to seeing amputee football evolve in Scotland.”
O’Neill will travel to Dubai with the charity in December to take on the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Race alongside a group of amputees, including charity founder Corinne Hutton.
THE RULES
Amputee football is a sport still in its infancy and the rules tend to vary between regions and countries. However, according to Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), certain regulations are considered as standard:
· An amputee is defined as someone who
is 'abbreviated' at or near the ankle or wrist.
· Outfield players may have two hands but
only one leg, whereas goalkeepers may have two feet but only one hand
· The game is played with metal crutches and without prostheses, the only exception being that bi-lateral amputees may play with a prosthesis
· Players may not use crutches to advance, control or block the ball. Such an action will be penalised in the same way as a hand-ball infringement. However, incidental contact between crutch and ball is tolerated
· Players may not use their residual limbs to voluntarily advance, control or block the ball. Such an action will be penalised in the same way as a hand-ball infringement. However, incidental contact between residual limb and ball is tolerated
· Shin pads must be worn
· Use of a crutch against a player will lead to ejection from the game and a penalty kick for the opposing team

· An amputee is defined as someone who

only one leg, whereas goalkeepers may have two feet but only one hand
· The game is played with metal crutches and without prostheses, the only exception being that bi-lateral amputees may play with a prosthesis
· Players may not use crutches to advance, control or block the ball. Such an action will be penalised in the same way as a hand-ball infringement. However, incidental contact between crutch and ball is tolerated
· Players may not use their residual limbs to voluntarily advance, control or block the ball. Such an action will be penalised in the same way as a hand-ball infringement. However, incidental contact between residual limb and ball is tolerated
· Shin pads must be worn
· Use of a crutch against a player will lead to ejection from the game and a penalty kick for the opposing team

Partick Thistle Amputees was put together by Finding Your Feet, Scotland’s leading limb-loss charity of which O’Neill is patron, and amputees from across the country attended today’s training session to benefit from O’Neill’s expertise.
Finding Your Feet hooked up with the Jags in March to give amputee Scots the opportunity to play football north of the border for the first time, prior to which Scots amputees had to travel more than 150 miles for a game of football.
The team has enjoyed regular training sessions since its formation and has already proved its prowess on the pitch when it competed south of the border in July. The team clinched the Runners Up shield at the England Amputee Football Association (EAFA) Takeda Cup Final at West Bromich, defeating veteran amputee teams including Arsenal and Man City Amputees. And with the team set to compete at the EAFA Irwin Mitchell Pre-season Cup 2016/17 at Manchester City’s training ground in October, the team hopes O’Neill’s guidance will help them secure more silverware.
Finding Your Feet was set up two years ago by Corinne Hutton, who was left a quadruple amputee after losing her hands and feet to septicaemia in June 2013. The charity supports amputees and those with limb differences through the creation of sporting and social initiatives including amputee climbing, skiing, swimming, cycling, football and movement therapy. Since her illness, Corinne (45) from Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire, who plays on the team and attended today’s training session, has succeeded in raising hundreds of thousands of pounds to help other amputees and more recently became the first female quadruple amputee in history to conquer Ben Nevis.
Northern Ireland’s unprecedented success at the Euros has seen charity patron Michael O’Neill’s stock and profile rise considerably, after he led his side to the second round before suffering a narrow defeat to Wales. He has been furnished with a growing list of honours in recognition of his achievements, including BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award 2016; RTE Manager of the Year Award; and Phillips Manager of the Year award. The session at Firhill falls just 24 hours before he will lead his international side to a training camp in Austria in preparation for the team’s first World Cup qualifier match against Czech Republic in Prague on 4 September.
