Last night, Brazil suffered their worst ever World Cup defeat and arguably the lowest point in their footballing history since losing the World Cup to Uruguay in the Maracanã at the 1950 tournament. Miroslav Klose scored to become the all-time top goalscorer in World Cup history, who, along with Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira and Andre Schurrle, put seven goals past the hosts to record one of the most memorable World Cup matches of all time.

As always, social media was hotting up as quickly as the goals were flying in. Here’s the best of what we found on a remarkable night…

Christ the Redeemer struggles to hide his despair. Brazil will not be back in Rio on Sunday for the final of their own World Cup. For many Brazilians, last night’s result rivals the defeat to Uruguay in 1950 as the worst day in their footballing history.

Many were quick to suggest that there was more than meets the eye to the 2014 World Cup logo design. Brazil were 5-0 down at half-time, having conceded all five within an eighteen minute capitulation.

Things certainly did escalate quickly for David Luiz and his team mates. His new employers in Paris must be hoping that the Sideshow Bob lookalike will shake off such erratic form before the start of the Ligue 1 season in France.

A couple from our friends in Springfield now. The first of which shows the spooky similarities from an episode earlier this year. Although they were being a little generous to Brazil with that scoreline!

Not even Brazil’s captain’s heartfelt apology to his mourning public was exempt from ridicule. Bart appears to take great pleasure in pausing and rewinding the moment that such a crushing defeat truly sank in for the maligned central defender.
