Supporters Direct Newsletter – Hearts one step closer to fan ownership

Date: 28th November 2014

Ann Budge

Supporters Direct’s latest newsletter will be released today, covering a wide range of stories relating to the work that SD is involved in, as well as stories from across Europe on the football supporter movement.

Covered in today’s newsletter is that of the news that Heart of Midlothian had been able to write off their football debt of £575,000. Chief Executive, Ann Budge is currently the majority shareholder at Tynecastle, but there is a procedure in place to eventually transfer ownership of the club over to the Foundation of Hearts supporters group – which comprises several other Hearts supporters groups, clubs and trusts.

Once the process is complete, the Edinburgh club will become arguably the biggest supporter-owned club in Scottish football and one of the biggest in the whole of the UK. Being able to write off the football debt at the club represents a significant milestone in achieving fan control at Hearts and should be viewed as another example of the growing influence and contribution of football supporters to to the way their clubs and the game as a whole is run in this country.
