We are all hoping Scottish football can make some sort of comeback in August.
How it will look? We still have no idea. Yet I firmly believe that Scottish sides from all of our divisions will have to continually adapt to fit into the new normal.
Dundee United and Hibs are already leading the way with some outside of the box thinking.
The Tangerines have brought out washable face coverings that have their club badge emblazoned on them. They have already sold out the first batch. They spotted an avenue to do with the current pandemic and released an item that will publicise the club and help protect the public.
The Hibees have decided to have ‘Thank You NHS’ on their shirts next term. A percentage of strip sales will go to various charities including NHS endorsed ones. I am hoping more teams follow suit and thank our frontline workers.
When our stadia reopens it will be in all likelihood without fans in them. That is clearly a massive disappointment for everyone but Scottish sides can still help ease the pain with some new ideas.
We could have supporters paying to have cardboard cutouts of themselves in their usual seats. Fans could sponsor players and get weekly calls from those they sponsor. The electronic boarding at the sides of pitches could display fan messages. Clubs could provide online feeds of games and have fans interact with commentary teams. We could see a bigger uptake in online programmes.
I am also hoping all our clubs remember to continue to support our communities even once football has returned. We still need them to show that they aren’t leaving anyone behind.
Whatever happens next, our clubs will need to be innovative as it will offer them the best chance of survival. We certainly don’t want to see any team collapsing due to Covid-19!
