Hibernian and Rangers ownership developments

Date: 6th January 2015

Hibs v Gers

Supporters Direct Scotland are encouraged by the latest developments at both Hibernian FC and Rangers FC respectively with regards to the possibility of greater supporter involvement in the running of both clubs.

In late December, Hibernian announced plans to release up to £2.5m worth of shares available for supporters to purchase, potentially giving them a controlling stake of 51% in the club; diluting the current owner’s shareholding in the process.

At Rangers, George Letham, Douglas Park and George Taylor – collectively known as the ‘Three Bears’ – purchased 13.29m shares from Laxey Partners, to become one of the largest shareholders in the club. A move that has been welcomed by supporters groups such as the Rangers Supporters Trust and Rangers First. The Three Bears positivity towards a potential supporter ownership structure has given the Ibrox faithful encouragement of a brighter future in Govan.

We are interested to hear more about developments at both clubs and will continue to offer our assistance to all supporter groups and clubs to ensure fans have a greater level of influence in how their clubs are run. SDS worked with a significant number of supporter groups in 2014 and look forward to continuing our work in the 2015.

We feel this shift in momentum towards wider ownership models through the game is a positive development for Scottish football and look forward to a bright future.
