Airdrie link up with KitAid to offer free season tickets to under 16s

Date: 27th June 2014

Airdrie ST

Aidrie fans under the age of 16 will be offered a free season ticket in exchange for old football kit this summer.
The club’s supporters’ trust have linked up with charity KitAid to launch a unique initiative aimed at helping those in need. Filling the main stand at New Broomfield with young faces next term.

And potentially making it into the Guinness Book of World Records if a staggering 10,000 strips are donated by the end of the year. Fans learned about the scheme at an open meeting on Tuesday night.

It will be formally launched at Airdrie’s ‘Wee Fair Day’, which is taking place on Saturday, June 28.

The trust will manage and fund the scheme after being given the green light to go ahead with their plan by the board.

A voucher entitling the holder to a free under-16 season ticket will be handed over by trust members in exchange for unwanted football jerseys or kit from any club in any size. KitAid will then fly out what they receive to young people in some of the world’s poorest countries.

“There is no catch,” said trust chair Willie Marshall. “Young people under the age of 16 will receive a voucher entitling them to a free season ticket in return for their old football kit.

“It doesn’t have to be Airdrie kit. It can be from any club. The only stipulation is that it must be in reasonable condition as KitAid will be sending it overseas to be worn again.

“Another aspect of this scheme is our bid to create a world record for most items of kit donated which is why we want to involve the whole community.

“We would love to receive unwanted kit from boys’ clubs and amateur teams, as well as from individuals, over the coming months. This is something very special everybody in the community can feel part of.”

Diamonds director Ann Marie Ballantyne gave the club’s backing to the scheme, with KitAid founder Derrick Williams MBE saying the charity was “delighted” to be in partnership with Airdrie.

The trust organised and funded ‘Kids for Free’ at the stadium in the second half of last season.

Willie added: “This is the ideal time to build on the feelgood factor created and do something positive to attract the next generation of Airdrieonians fans to New Broomfield.”
