Following on from Gareth Bale’s superb individual winning goal for Real Madrid in last night’s Copa del Rey victory over rivals Barcelona, we’ve compiled a short list of brilliant individual goals from Scotland’s domestic and international stage. Paul Gascoigne vs. Aberdeen – SPL 1995/96
The outrageously talented Englishman netted a hat-rick at Ibrox in a 3-1 win over Aberdeen to seal Rangers’ 8th championship in a row; the second of which was this excellent individual run and finish. Though not the quickest player, Gascoigne’s phenomenal close control and composure saw him drift through the Aberdeen midfield and defence before calmly side-footing the ball into the Dons’ net.
Chris Maguire vs. Iceland Under 21s – Euro 2011 Qualifying Round
Having just conceded the opening goal of this 2nd leg qualifying match, Chris Maguire elected to shoot straight from the kick-off against Scotland’s Icelandic counterparts, catching the goalkeeper off his line and immediately reducing the aggregate deficit. Scotland would go on to concede a second only five minutes after this extraordinary strike, failing to qualify for the Championships, but Maguire’s moment of opportunism was by far and away the highlight of the tie.
Archie Gemmill vs. Netherlands – 1978 World Cup
An obvious choice, but one that will live forever in the hearts and minds of Scottish football fans. Unfortunately, Gemmill’s solo effort wasn’t enough to take Scotland through to the next stage of the World Cup in Argentina, but stands the test of time as one of the most memorable goals in World Cup history.
Kris Doolan vs. Hibernian – SPFL Premiership 2013/14
One from this season and not too dissimilar to that of Gareth Bale’s winning effort in Valencia last night. The Partick Thistle player picks up the ball on the left-hand touchline before gracefully running the length of the half, beating two Hibs defenders, and lifting the ball over the goalkeeper – a far classier finish than Bale’s toe poke per chance?
James McFadden vs. France – Euro 2008 Qualifying Round
McFadden’s long distance strike momentarily put Scotland top of their tough Euro 2008 qualifying group ahead of the French and World Champions Italy. A great first touch was bettered by a stunning strike that beat the admittedly poor Mickaël Landreau; cue many spilled pints across Scotland’s bars and pubs.
Kenny Miller vs. England – 2013 International Friendly
Not a particularly meaningful goal, but despite defeat, Scotland’s first match against the Auld Enemy since 1999 was a respectable showing. Having taking the lead through James Morrison, Scotland were pegged back by a Theo Walcott striker before Miller regained the advantage early in the second half; having controlled a low cross from Alan Hutton, he spun Chelsea’s Gary Cahill before firing a left-footed shot past Joe Hart. England would recover with two goals to edge the encounter 3-2, but Miller’s goal was a highlight for those of the Tartan Army who made the trip down south.
