SPFL Could’ve Respected Pyramid System Had They Promoted Brora Rangers & Kelty Hearts

Date: 17th June 2020

Once again talk of league reconstruction has failed to materialise as too many clubs decided against a new 14-10-10-10 league set up.

It was always going to be a tough ask, given that Scottish football sides will always look in a short term basis and will usually vote out of self interests. It is also extremely galling that our clubs and the SPFL have failed to listen to football fans during this pandemic when it comes to making huge decisions.

Personally, I am also a bit disturbed by how quickly The SPFL closed it’s doors to the pyramid system and cutting it’s self off from the Highland and Lowland Leagues

People will suggest that they couldn’t fulfil the play-off fixtures and that is a big reason for not proceeding but we’ve had plenty of time to work on a plan that could have kept the pyramid system relevant.

We still have no idea when The Scottish League Two campaign will kick off for 2020-21, so with that in mind couldn’t we expand our bottom tier by adding two extra places for a season?

There’s speculation that suggests that if Leagues One and League Two were to happen next term, then they are likely to be involved in shorter seasons. In reality, expanding it to a 12 team set up will actually benefit League two as they can play each side twice and that will give them a twenty-two game campaign instead of an eighteen game league. Surely that will win more support from the club’s faithful.

It would also add more diversity to the lower league, by adding a team from the two regions and show the Highland and Lowland League that they are respected and that The SPFL haven’t just dismissed them as after thoughts.

Now we could then relegate the bottom two teams at the end of the season and have third bottom side playing the winners of the Highland Lowland winners playoff at the end of the 20/21 season.

There’s no ideal solution and I still hate the fact we are relegating teams who didn’t get a proper chance to save themselves. It looks likely that Hearts and Partick Thistle will take legal action against The SPFL. I will be interested to see what comes of that court case.

But I honestly think that we can still save the pyramid system by showing some sporting integrity and not closing our doors to two deserving teams in Brora Rangers and Kelty Hearts, who have earned the right to prove themselves at a higher level.
