My Favourite Scotland Jersey

Self isolation can be hard, it can be extremely tough for those of us that adore our football as that’s also in lockdown. 

With that in mind, it can give be a good time to look back and remember what made us fall in love with the beautiful game in the first place. 

Reminiscing is something that can start conversations and even if it’s just online, those chats that can still keep us close and help keep us sane during this unprecedented time. 

In this post I’ve decided to talk about my favourite Scotland national team jersey. 

I have a few that instantly spring to mind.

The tartan home kit for Euro 96′ was lovely and it reminds me of Ally McCoist scoring that goal against Switzerland and nearly reaching the knock-out stages for the first time in our history. 

In the early nineties we also had a pretty unique away kit (above). I think this white, purple and pink strip split opinion but I really liked it. It was imaginative and a bit different to anything else I’d seen from a Scotland jersey. 

I also adored the Diadora away strip circa 2007. The white top with the pale blue cross on it. It’s forever linked to our national team’s heroic victory in Paris and that stunning James McFadden strike. 

Our current kit supplier Adidas deserves a big thumbs up because I can’t really fault the Scotland strips that they’ve produced thus far.. It’s nice to have such a well established company making our kits and doing such a good job. 

But for me, my favourite ever Scotland strip was the home kit we had for Euro 92. 

It wasn’t over the top or in your face. It was understated and classy. 

The top was a nice dark navy blue. On the right sleeve it had a cool wee white design. The strip had a design within the primary colour. The shorts were white and they had a similar design to that of the sleeve but that was in navy blue and the socks were dark with a neat red trim. 

I think it was probably the first kit I owned that I pretty much wore out just because I wore it so much. That’s me in the main photo celebrating my seventh birthday, proudly wearing my new Scotland top. 

That’s probably why I like it so much. It was the first thing that I identified as being Scottish and it helped cement a pride for my nation. I loved wearing it and I had passion whenever I’d see my heroes like Ally McCoist, Gary McAllister or Stuart McCall also wearing it. 

That’s why it’s good to look back at times, especially during a crisis and just remember why we are proud of where we come from and appreciate what we love in life.
